Library Funding Vote July 22

On July 22, the Seneca Falls Library will hold a vote asking for increased funding from Seneca Falls school district taxpayers. If approved, taxpayers will go from providing $75,000 annually to $127,000, an increase of $52,000.

The library last sought a funding increase in 2002 and is asking for one now to cover inflationary costs and maintain the current level of services.

On Tuesday, July 15th at 6 p.m. a public hearing will be held at the Seneca Falls Library on the pending vote for increased funding.

The public hearing will be an opportunity for community members to come and ask questions of the Library Board of Trustees. The Trustees are proposing an increase from the Seneca Falls school district taxpayers to meet library needs. The proposed tax rate would go from 18 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value to 30 cents per $1,000, an increase of 12 cents per $1,000. The library has not sought a funding increase since 2002 before the move into the new building.

Infra-Red Tent Book Club to Meet

The Infra-Red Tent Reading group will meet on July 1, 2008 at 7 p.m. to discuss Sex Wars: A Novel of Gilded Age New York by Marge Piercy

According to the reviews, you will love or hate the writing of a novel about post-Civil War America. The book portrays women's rights crusader Elizabeth Cady Stanton maturing in an era when if a married woman "earned or inherited any money, it was [her husband's]".

And on August 5th also at 7 p.m. the book Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. The Author is the native-born Somali member of the Dutch parliament who faced death threats after collaborating on a film about domestic violence against Muslim women with controversial director Theo van Gogh (who was himself assassinated).

The Infra-Red Tent book club is a group of women who gather on the first Tuesday of each month at the Seneca Falls Library to discuss a book read the previous month. The group is open and all are invited to come.

"Graphic Novels Are In!"

They come in all sorts of subjects for all sorts of readers.

They are known as "graphic novels" and they are sweeping the book world, particularly the teen book world.

The Seneca Falls Library launches its growing collection of graphic novels with a "Graphic Novels are In!" event at 7 p.m. on July 7 in the library. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. Card holders will be invited to borrow new titles.

The new books were purchased through grants provided by Friends of the Seneca Falls Library and the Finger Lakes Library System.

"The graphic novel genre is a refinement of comic books. Graphic novels take comic books to the next level," said Seneca Falls Library Director Michael Caraher.

The genre features both fiction and non-fiction literature, Caraher said. The comic-style art in graphic novels is often attractive to "reluctant readers" who might not otherwise choose to read, he said.

Many graphic novels are aimed at teen readers, he said, but the Seneca Falls Library also carries graphic novels in its collections for younger readers and for adults, he said.

Encouraging readers of all ages to try graphic novels for themselves, Caraher said, "Why not? Try everything."
