Mynderse Library Reaches $3 Million Goal

A large contribution has launched Mynderse Library's Next Edition campaign to the top. Dr. Rodney and Roy Littlejohn's recent pledge of $125,000 brought the campaign to a culmination at $3 million. The two gentlemen's generous donation qualified the new library's large meeting room to be named in commemoration of Roy's wife and Rodney's mother, Josephine M. Littlejohn.

"My father and I feel the new Mynderse Library is a valuable community project and our contribution was the perfect way to honor my mother while supporting this important endeavor," said Dr. Littlejohn.

Since the library Board of Trustees launched its aggressive Next Edition capital campaign in September 2001, it has garnered contributions from individual supporters, foundations, governmental organizations, and businesses.

"We are ecstatic about the Littlejohn's pledge and reaching our $3 million goal," said Sam Dickieson, president of Mynderse Library Board of Trustees. "The unrelenting generosity that has emanated from this community is amazing and we cannot thank the contributors enough for bringing our vision to life."

According to library officials, the original goal was to raise $2 million for the building and the remaining $1 million would be used to establish an endowment. However, modifications to the building's original plan increased costs to nearly $3 million. The library anticipates continuing its fund raising efforts to support its operating expenses.

"We will be launching endowment and operating fund campaigns this year, which will not be as aggressive as the Next Edition campaign and will become tradition for the new library. Beyond our operating costs, these funds will be used to initiate new programs and purchase new books, " said Jennifer Sawyer, director of development for Mynderse Library.

The new Mynderse Library is currently under construction at the corner of Beryl Avenue and Cayuga Street. The library anticipates hosting a grand re-opening during summer 2003.
