Library News
December 2003
Hundreds attended the opening of the new Seneca Falls Library on Saturday, Nov. 22. A warm November day was the icing on the cake for the long-awaited event. A large crowd gathered in the computer cluster and on the second-floor mezzanine to hear the day's speakers: board of trustees president Susan Porter, past board president Sam Dickieson, capital campaign chairman Bob Kernan and state Sen. Michael F. Nozzolio, who procured $1 million in state funding for the new building, which has been named in his honor.
Following the speeches, the crowd headed outdoors for the ribbon cutting and sign unveiling. The library was then open to the public and a steady stream of visitors came throughout the afternoon. Young adults led tours of the new building and magician Aaron Isaacs entertained young and old. But the greatest attraction was the facility itself, which includes a designated children's area, a meeting room, 12 public access computers, an archival room and several cozy reading areas.
Fund-raising for this new building began in the fall of 2001 and ground was broken on the project in the spring of 2002. The Nov. 22, 2003 opening was the culmination of many years of hard work. As past board president Sam Dickieson said, the new library "is a dream come true."
Past board president Sam Dickieson was all smiles during the grand opening weekend. Dickieson, a former teacher, was the driving force behind the new library and helped launch the project with donations from former students.
